I don't think I've ever made something complicated (I've made some complex stuff) enough to use m4. I'd like to know as well what uses others have for it.

The only time I've ever used m4, I was trying to figure out why the fuck some build was failing. It turns out a developer had written some function that worked just fine when presented with the raw source, but when autobloat was invoked on the whole mess, it changed a specific header's symbols in such a way that a now-deleted file was referenced for the prototype instead of the new file to which the prototype had been moved.. It was bullshit, and there was really no goddamn reason for it. It (and other things) was enough to make me swear off build managment systems except for pure make for quite a long time.
