Jeff Atwood's Discourse BBS software

Name: Anonymous 2013-09-04 19:20

Discourse is a from-scratch reboot, an attempt to reimagine what a modern, sustainable, fully open-source Internet discussion platform should be today – both from a technology standpoint and a sociology standpoint.

We tried to build in all the lessons learned from the last ten years of Internet web forums, so that the community has a natural immune system to defend itself from trolls, bad actors, and spammers. There's also a trust system, so engaged community members can assist in the governance of their community.

The act of participating in a discussion should fundamentally feel good in a way that it currently does not on all existing forums and mailing lists. It should be fun to have discussions with other human beings, not a chore, or something that's barely tolerable.

Not to worry! It's highly customizable. You could make a red bricks and green background theme!

Looks like he applied a WEB 2.0 theme to Shiitchan and made it even worse.

Name: Video Games for Pre-Teens? 2013-09-04 19:50

I'm reluctant to open up the world of "M" rated video games for my 11- and 12-year-old sons. Is there anything that's really going to click with them (other than Minecraft)? This seems to be a pretty big hole in what's out there. You either get G-rated kiddie games or hard-M FPSs.

One answer states:
They are at the perfect age to begin learning how to make their own games!

Good fucking G-d, when will they get over the ``everyone should learn javascript xD'' stage? This entire shitfad is pointless, not everyone should learn programming and you're going to make children hate computers if they end up hating programming because their redditard fathers told them to do so.

not everyone should learn programming
Wrong. Everyone should be forced to learn mathematics, formal logic and programming at early ages. The world is chock full of morons and our incompetent education systems are a big part of the problem.

But what's worse: telling your kids to go make things themselves or just letting them say ``gimme gimme'' until they get what they want?

not everyone [needs to] learn programming [but it would be an asset in future endeavors, like accounting, driving, writing, etc.]
I am a proponent of, if the child wants to learn (which is like 95% of the time) teach them. Force them only to complete their actual responsibilities (cleaning, play/exercise, socialize, etc.). One of the most important skills you can teach a child is how to hunt and gather food, then clean and cook the food. Gardening/cultivating is a bonus.

Children are stupid and don't know what's good for them. If you don't know how to manipulate them into learning important (yet ``boring'') things, the TV will instead manipulate them into being stupider.

Also, if you expect your child to live in a democracy, they need to have a basic of understanding of formal logic so they don't end up voting for the candidate who dissed the others the most.

What? You really expect your local jock, that tanned loose whore and the hobo who dropped out and does crack to learn programming? What the fuck for?

You're both dumb, illogical, and wrong.

What kind of weird country do you live in? All the niggerchildren in South America won't bother if it ain't about soccer, rap or porn.

The other skills you mention are indeed essential skills. If anything, children should be taught to cook and keep care of themselves. I don't see what's the point of teaching programming to some retard who's pursuing a Womyn Studies major.

I'm wrong for not forcing that guy who wants to major in sociology to learn programming? I don't think that's how things work.

How old? 1-13 year olds always ask questions: "Why does this behaves that way? How do you do this? What is that? I want to become a _____. ET CETERA." That is the proper time to teach and/or embark (in case you know little about said subject). Obviously that is why you should remove idolatries: TV, sweets, brands, etc..
Recreational Toys, crafting tools and materials, utensils, books, etc. is all you really need in a learning environment. It fosters intuitiveness to eliminate boredom. They will be engaged for life, hacking.

Your are better off asking why he wants to major in sociology, and how can he achieve said goal. If he can provide you a clear map, hopefully with backup plans, then you should urge no further. If there are flaws/inconsistencies, then you show them a proper map on programming, sealed and tested.

What you do not want him to mentally say is "no." But, "You are right, this plan is flawed, maybe I should make/adopt another one." Eventually he will end up following the correct path. And after years ahead, you can wisper to him: "I told you so." with glee.

Most kids are curious, yes, but restricting their curiosity to programming is just inhumane. Giving them the choice to learn programming is actually a nice idea (even better if they end up liking it), but *forcing* every single living human being to take a course on programming, possibly against their will?

Do you think a kid who's curious about the inner workings of some machine, or the structures that make up a building, or even the social structures of some community is going to fulfill his thirst for knowledge by learning how to program? I doubt so.
Also, I've never ever heard a single person saying "wow i wonder how they made that game!", it's usually "i'd wish i could make games Xd what? math? no thats for nerds :P" or "wow those people sure know what they're doing" and nothing else beyond that.

Not everyone was born with an ``analytical mind''. And programming is not the only way of developing your interests.

Because he gives jackshit about computers, maybe. I'd also be reluctant to teach/present/show programming to that kid who's always complaining about how math is fucking boring and wished weed was legalized.

Still, forcing every single living human being to take a course in formal logic would significantly improve our world.

Hey, when did I say I would "restricting their curiosity to programming". I only take off the addictions agents, leave other tools there. The kid will decide what he wants to do, and ask for help when he needs it. Common rules of social engagement. We could not have industries without that.

Then you are better off leaving him, simple as that. If he needs your help, you charge him. Loans are paid in 30days or less.

Hopefully he will grow a pair, and cultivate his own Cannabis species. Better than than learn something h has no use for. We both cannot be forced to join the cosmetic industry. You would not force him to do as well.

Left/right brain is bullshit. I've taught discrete math to two mentally challenged individuals (and they actually got decent grades on their exams) so don't tell me it's not possible. There are mental skills that over 95% of people can master, one of which is the fluent use of a natural language. I posit that formal logic, explained by a good teacher, is one of these skills.

If you're not forcing the children to go for programming, then I don't see any problem with this fad of wanting everyone to be a ``Javascript cloud ninja rockstar''. But you see, I'm complaining about this very fad because even politicians are seriously considering implementing this, thus forcing prostitutes, shopping carts and Japanese danmaku-firing girls to learn programming in order to graduate from high school.
