Well, the sole fact there are 7 billions is very important for all of us because that is a heavy load on environment and the proof that humanity haven't solved one important problem: population control. We just need to introduce third world countries to capitalism. It's already a work-in-progress. Indians are becoming middle class and having less kids. Give it a couple decades. Unless some major global economic collapse happens, by 2050 most countries will be wealthy enough to have sub-replacement fertility.

There's no "unless" about it. The Earth physically can't sustain the kind of consumption required to turn the whole world into Western drones and the attempt would guarantee total collapse. Attempting to do this would thus be ridiculous, luckily our leaders are smarter than they appear and have no intention of turning billions more into resource consuming wastes of space.

Reality check: the Earth goes through 12-20k year cycles of complete devastation and then rebirth. Our leaders know this and are currently trying to use all human productivity to develop technology that can allow them to survive the cataclysm with records and tech intact and emerge into the new world as Gods. They will fail, of course, but that is the goal of "civilization" in this era.
