I watched the original trilogy recently and I have to say that it is extremely overrated. Not only that but it does not even try to follow the books (which I hear that are not that good either). I would go with the hobbit instead for the simple fact that it can't be as bad as the trilogy.

start with the first one, watch in order. extended editions of course. ignore hobbit

I tried to watch RETURN OF THE KING extended version but it was 4 hours long and all I could think in my head was "what kind of movie is FOUR HOURS long? This is crazy omg" so by about minute 20 it was like I'd watched the 4 hours over and over and had to switch it off from exhaustion.
