Unsatiable desire and finite resources

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-20 22:14

In my economics class, the professor said economics is figuring out how to satisfy infinite desire with our finite resources. But is desire really infinite?

I just want a family and a small house in a peaceful area. That doesn't seem like unlimited desire to me. I think my professor is subconsciously spreading the capitalist propaganda she's been brainwashed with, to think of people as economic units rather than human beings.

In many cases, demand is created artificially through marketing and advertising. No one wants or seeks out Coca-Cola, but the machines and everywhere, and so are the ads. Unlimited desire, my ass.

If Coca-Cola was legally able to sell its original formula, there would be a demand.

But is desire really infinite?
For every level of comfort attained, there is greater comfort level above it as you get use to the present level of comfort.

So finite but unbounded, though it's easier to just say infinite.

You have just internalized the scarity of resources. Otherwise you would openly admit that in reality, you would keep wanting more and more. It’s just part of being human. It doesn’t have anything to do with capitalism except that capitalism was based on human nature.

Don't change these.
