Stalin was not a nationalist, he encouraged ethnic mixing and worked to destroy the notion of nation. For example, he deported many Caucasian and Baltic peoples to Asia in order to weaken their nationalist sentiments. It wasn't until Stalin's death that these people got a chance to return to their ancestral lands.

That doesn't matter at all. He was primarily focused on building a Soviet state with people loyal only to that state. Ethnic factionalism is the antithesis of that. You've been reading too much racist ``alt-right'' trash from a certain imagereddit and that has left you with poor opinion of what nationalism is.
