alot of the C programmers have died or retired, same for the developers of the original *nix userland components like X11. They have been replaced by the newer generation, not really by force, but because the projects were simply abandoned over time. This newer gen don't want to deal with C, so instead use languages with gc or mandatory RAII, etc. to help with managing the heap properly.
