My attitude towards programming

Name: Anonymous 2018-12-17 21:18

In order to stay relevant, I keep up with industry trends, whether I like them or not. That means: meme languages, JavaScript errywhere, cloud, lack of privacy, whatever. If it's current, and there are jobs related to it, I keep up with it. Even if I vehemently oppose it.

I am not going to become one of those dudes who becomes unhirable because of insisting that previous generations were better. That will only help you get jobs maintaining legacy projects, rather than working on newer stuff.

I think many people on this board tend to prefer older stuff. It's true that technology waxes and wanes in terms of trends (cloud computing is similar to old-school terminals that were useless unless connected to a server), but whether you like it or not, you have to keep up with what everyone else is doing.

Some people say Esperanto is a better language than English. But that won't help you when everyone around you speaks English. It doesn't matter if you prefer Lisp and Haskell if all the jobs in your area are for web dev or Java.

Programming always changes, so your skills can't be set in stone.

How do you deal with current tech trends? Do you just accept it, or do you reject it in favor of your own personal preferences for language/design/privacy? Do you think your approach to this problem makes you more hirable, or harder to employ?

What's not to like about it? It pays well. Would you rather work at McDonald's and be a "hobbyist" programmer who does it for free? Why?

No, I'll stick with being an engineer and doing hobby projects.
