Also, Linux is just an amateur clone of SunOS, which is itself a clone of Unix, which was designed by professional system engineers working at Bell Labs. They had years of experience working with operating systems beforehand.

In any case, have you heard of SDN (Software-Defined Networking) or NFV (Network Functions Virtualization)?
Basically, these days you can have x86 whitebox systems (generic computers) perform the same functions as old-school routing and switching equipment, which is inflexible.
