Why do I have to log in into my single user Windows 10 desktop? And before I can sign in, I also have to click on an ugly lock screen image, which for some reason displays unasked for advertisement. Why do I have to sign in each time I close laptop lid or after screen goes dark?

There is no way to disable Cortana either. Just deleting C:\Windows\SystemApps\Microsoft.Windows.Cortana would leave you without start menu and other apps could fail too, because start menu is now part of Cortana, that is why it is so incredible slow - Cortana is the most bloated and annoying Windows 10 app, taking hundred of megabytes and 100% CPU to bring up a simple tree-like popup menu with icons and text items.

Also, Microsoft.Windows.Cortana\SearchUI.exe is read-only for any user but TrustedInstaller, so even Administrators can't modify it. That was done to prevent users from patching it to disable useless bloat.

"TrustedInstaller.exe is Windows Module Installer service which is part of Windows Resource Protection.

Windows Resource Protection (WRP) is a technology that restricts access to certain core system files, folders, and registry keys that are part of the Windows installation. WRP prevents files with .dll, .exe, .ocx, and .sys file extensions from being modified or replaced.

Protecting these key resources is important to overall system stability, and, as such, they can only be modified by the Windows Module Installer service (TrustedInstaller.exe). If someone with administrative rights attempts to modify or replace a file that is protected by WRP, he will be presented with the message "Access Denied"."

MSVC6 is superior.

Lol, leave it to cudder to suggest outdated software for production use. MSVC6 is full of compiler bugs, and non-standard behavior.

My favourite is probably seeing this in ```portable code''':
for(int i=0, bool b=false; i<10000; i++){
/* */
}

if (b == false) {
/* */
}

Avoid Google Chrome, it comes bloated with spyware:
https://www.techgainer.com/prevent-googlecrashhandler-exe-process-running-background-windows/
GoogleCrashHandler.exe runs continuously on your computer if you’ve selected to send anonymous usage statistics and crash reports to Google

Cool. But I didn't select it to do that.

Ok. I've installed Classic Shell (http://classicshell.net/) and suddenly start menu pops up in a fraction of a second, instead of 10 seconds delay.

That's why I use SRWare Iron.

It doesn't end here!
https://www.techrepublic.com/article/windows-10-cloud-could-this-mystery-os-be-microsofts-answer-to-chromebooks/
Microsoft is planning to release a stripped-back, easier-to-use version of Windows, which would emulate the simplicity of Chrome OS with its cloud-based apps.

soon you won't be able to run your desktop programs at all.

Windows 10 Cloud will be a simplifed version of the OS, which will only run Unified Windows Platform apps installed from the Windows Store.

TLDR: only Microsoft approved and controlled code will be permitted to run.

I did the same for mine to avoid upgrading to 10, but it hasn't triggered any anti-piracy mechanisms.

easier-to-use version of Windows
It's easier to use if there's nothing to use.

Ubuntu "just works"(well mostly) but its Usable By-default. You don't have to edit dozen of dot files or muck with console much. All my family is using ubuntu and they like it: no viruses, very few crashes, everything is much easier to fix and/or reinstall.

too bad that computer bought at similar price outperforms consoles. then again, does it matter? I've got a gaming PC and I still mostly play NetHack

Last time i used Windows i was getting paranoid about the games and game-related software, it was like a minefield of trojans and viruses. Scanning everything through virustotal and that sandbox site that runs windows apps.

I'd definitely get one if I had the money. But I'll probably end up building one for much cheaper and dual boot between FreeBSD and Windows 10.
