Why is SICP so good?

Why is it considered an important work of computer science education? I read it out of curiosity last year, it's nothing special. It teacches some useful basics but quickly diverts into masturbatory academic drivel.

SICP's problem is that it teaches only the bare fundamentals which are quicker grasped in practice. The rest of the book is irrelevant math problems, they don't have anything to do with programming.
Oh, and SICP doesn't teach anything about type theory, which is a big miss.
