Singular they has been used for centuries, while nobody has ever used your examples in a non-comical way. We advocate singular they not because it makes sense, but because it is accepted as grammatically correct. People act like this is something that was just made up in the past decade, when it wasn't.

Besides, "they" is much better than "ey" or other made up gender-neutral pronouns.
