Obviously there is Plan 9 and Inferno, but they are Unix and Unix is not the goal. Neither are they good enough for practical use. But then there's FreeBSD.

OpenBSD is great for networking -- complex routing and firewalls, simple mail and proxy servers. FreeBSD is great for ENTERPRIES application servers. Plan 9 is a delightful video game for programmers, and as a side effect is a pretty nice development environment, even for code that will run on other platforms.
