And this is a fact. Only a mentally challenged person would pledge his loyalty to a piece of land and the authority that governs it.

I think it's not that they're dumb, but that they're not very critical. Something about inclination and not capacity. It's not as if "having the same mental capacity, everyone would come to the same conclusions", that is not the case, because the physical world is still in-itself meaningless, and so there is a lot of room for invention.
