Did I break the law [hit and run]?

I hit and killed a cow on my morning commute the other day, so bloody and gory. I think it must have escaped from a nearby paddock, it was just standing there past a blind corner I couldn't swerve in time like I usually do with livestock. Anybody else done this? I just drove off, is that legal or should I have hunted the owner?

You're lucky, I hit a sheep coming out of my drive way once, but there's no gas station in 60 miles where I live so it was a long drive covered in stinking blood/entrails to get to a car wash. Hoses are illegal due to water shortages.
