Suppose you have a 100 TB dataset, how your strong CPU will handle it with 1TB of storage?

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 14:33

>>81
you don't have a 100TB dataset

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 14:33

imagine larping about big data like this

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 14:34

>>82
Well, you can have ten 10TB datasets, its the same thing. How do you expect them to exist on a 1TB storage workstation?

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 14:35

>>84
there's a big difference between 10TB and 100TB, and these ``workstation'' builds are for fantasy role-playing about how you're working on data when you're actually just spending your time posting fantasy computer builds on a text board spinoff of an anime website

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 14:36

>>83
Big Data actually exists. Any neckbeard NEET can produce Big Data, its not magical or some elite hacker exclusive. People just pay extortionate sums to host it in a cloud instead of using a workstation.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 14:51

Imagine being this tech illiterate that you think storage can be replaced by strong CPUs.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:01

>>86
People pay "extortionate" amounts because if you have a single copy of important data, then you get what you deserve when it fails.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:01

imagine thinking you need a dozen drives for a personal computer

imagine thinking everything should be local instead of on a server

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:03

Also SSD storage and plenty of RAM are far more effective at IO than storing data on cheap HDDs and low-RAM setups.
More RAM is more Cache space. SSDs are essentially a slower type of RAM(that why PCIE SSDs are ideal storage medium for random IO on large datasets).

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:06

1.This is about worsktations. Workstations can cost like mid-range cars.
2.Imagine trusting amazon with all your data and them banning you on a whim.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:10

why is this autist so obsessed with having 100TB of storage and more RAM than he'll ever need?

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:16

>>92
Its an abstract kind of "best workstation build" if you can afford it. see >>90 for ram.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:22

Extra storage is useless if you never use it. There's no advantage to having 100TB of storage if you only use 2TB. You could make a dumb fantasy build with a million terabytes of storage, but what's the point?

Processing power is useful for everyday stuff. Extra RAM or storage is not.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:22

Storage and RAM are performance constraints. Once you have enough, adding more won't help you.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:23

Additionally, if you had $50k to spend, you'd be better off getting a cheaper computer and spending the rest on something more important. As in, not tech.

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 15:32

>>92
Hey here is a build for you. No nasty overpriced ram and SSDs, just the cheapest stuff that can handle a terabyte of data.

Travel - Whats the point of traveling? Bunch of expensive photos or chinese trinkets sold as souvenirs?
Saving up - thats not a hobby its common sense.
New car - thats not a hobby either, its also waste of money for someone who wouldn't use it much.

Whats the point of traveling?
imagine being this much of a neckbeard
Bunch of expensive photos or chinese trinkets sold as souvenirs?
you are thinking about life from a materialistic point of view

life is about experiences, not objects
for someone who wouldn't use it much.
are you a shut-in? cars are useful for everyday life

Name: Anonymous 2018-08-31 16:46

you are thinking about life from a materialistic point of view
Tourism is most extravagant materialistic activity i can think of, and it entails spending absurd amount of money on overpriced "for tourist" experience. Tourists are not some spiritual pilgrims finding answers to their travels. They're pigs shoving their faces into every corner to find something genuine and authentic, just to fill the void in their dull and bland lifestyle - they can't produce any meaning for their efforts "its for the expirience" "enriching my worldview" are vague excuses that mask their inability to acknowledge how insulated and sheltered their worldview was before: the worst part is they ignore reality from their daily life and need to get "face-to-face" experience to even consider something different might exists. Closed-minded simpletons.

life is about experiences, not objects
I prefer safe and controlled world where i decide the expirience, I'm not searching for adventure and exotic expiriences, i appreciate life in small pieces and slow motion - i don't seek cheap thrills and status symbols. There is nothing enlightening in tourist trips and there isn't some magical experience outside your mind - a single vivid dream is worth more year of tourism for experience .

cars are useful for everyday life
For American suburbs maybe. I don't live in suburbia and i don't travel for leisure and i don't need expensive status symbols.

getting this mad about people traveling
sour grapes
I bet you haven't traveled to many other countries and you're just trying to justify your lack of travel
I prefer safe and controlled world
autistic and boring
I don't live in suburbia
neither do I, but cars are still useful
american cities don't have the best public transportation, and do you really expect me to take an uber everywhere?

>>107
do you really expect me to take an uber everywhere?
for getting to point X: Bikes, trains, taxis, metro, buses, public transport, airlines, etc
For food:delivery and local stores(i live within walking distance <1km to 20 stores).
For work:remote work(e.g. ssh), telecommuting, work from home
For leisure: Google Street View/Maps/Google Earth, Photo collections, local websites, etc

remote work

not always an option, also do you really prefer staying indoors all the time? I hate working from home because of the lack of separation between work and home, it's blurring boundaries that should really be separate

For leisure: Google Street View/Maps/Google Earth, Photo collections, local websites, etc

this sounds really fucking dystopian and I sincerely hope you are joking

modern life is fucking pathetic

too much time rotting in front of a screen instead of doing something meaningful Edited on 31/08/2018 17:42.

do you really prefer staying indoors all the time?
yeah definitely. I feel more productive, talk more with my wife, and watch anime when I get bored
a lot of people dream of working from home for a reason

it's blurring boundaries that should really be separate
well sure, if the boundaries are work as "something you hate" and home as "where i want to be"

this sounds really fucking dystopian and I sincerely hope you are joking
too much time rotting in front of a screen instead of doing something meaningful
what part?
those are just my e-hobbies, i dont actually sit glued to a screen all day
