There is no need or justification to be tolerant of intolerance. Indeed, tolerance of intolerance is encouraging intolerance, and is thus the opposite of tolerance. Your argument is equivalent to "killing is bad, therefore you should let a suicide bomber carry out his attack, rather than killing him first."
And gays cannot marry because a marriage is, and always shall be, a union between man and woman.
Marriage in the legal sense is whatever the law defines it to be. What religion defines it to be is basically make-believe as far as the law is concerned. I could marry my lampshade right now and the law wouldn't care, unless I asked for special rights because of it.
