Anyone who thinks Sunni vs Shia is a political struggle should just look at the current Saudi vs Iran crisis. It had nothing to do with politics, only with a religious authority who was executed. Then the Iranian religious leader prophesied the downfall of the Saudis and look what happened: all the Sunni states from Bahrain to Sudan have severed diplomatic relations with Iran. This has 0 to do with politics and 100% with religion. Politicians start wars for resources and power and other rational material things, not spiritual disputes and prophesies.
