US made lots of countries, especially the European ones, sign the Kyoto protocol on the grounds of "ecology", but the US itself didn't sign it despite being the largest CO₂ emitter. Now European companies have to pay extra costs for reducing the carbon footprint, while American companies enjoy the freedom to pollute (and the corresponding competitive edge).
