Aug. 23 (UPI) -- Authorities in Portland, Ore., are investigating the circumstances that led to opposing groups of hundreds of political demonstrators clashing in the city on Sunday, officials said.

Left-aligned activists began gathering earlier Sunday to prepare for a counter-protest to oppose a planned event by right-wing demonstrators, which included members of the far-right Proud Boys.

Around 2:30 p.m. hundreds gathered near Tom McCall Waterfront Park to oppose the far-right demonstration, according to The Washington Post. That crowd was made up of left-wing protestors, and some identified themselves as antifa or antifascists.

Footage obtained by The Guardian shows far-right groups engaging in vandalism and toppling an ambulance. One was arrested for shooting a weapon in public.

The far-right crowd throughout the downtown location was also firing paintballs.

The city was anticipating protesters for days, but said it did not actively intervene because of lack of resources, according to The Washington Post.

Why is anyone surprised by the strategic retreat of Portland police from the latest round of Proud Boy/anti-fascist showboating?

I don’t disagree with the alarm expressed over politics and violence by Esquire’s Charles Pierce:

“If we’re starting to accept street brawling and thuggery as parts of the political process,” Pierce concluded, “we are heading down a dark road that dead-ends at a beer hall in Munich.”

But a current conflict, rather than the ramp-up of the Third Reich, may offer better context for the Aug. 20 announcement by Portland Police Chief Chuck Lovell: “You should not expect to see police officers standing in the middle of the crowd trying to keep people apart.”

How did we reach this unnerving juncture? In a nutshell:

· Portland police are short-handed in a city where shootings and the homicide rate are on track to break all records.

· The cops have been told they can’t be trusted to use tear gas, batons and other less-lethal force in crowd control.

· The bureau’s all-volunteer Rapid Response Team is ancient history, the 50 officers having resigned en masse.

· Ardent progressives have demanded for years that the cops adopt far less confrontational tactics.

Last Sunday, Portland Police did. This much seems clear: The cops weren’t being asked to run, as they say, “toward the fire.” They are being castigated because they are no longer inclined to serve, protect or position themselves between right-wing loudmouths and the left-wing demonstrators who insist, “All Cops Are Bastards.”
