Why won't Americans say ``nigger''?

I don't mean malevolently because actually calling someone a nigger is for racist shitheads, but why are Americans terrified of using the word when talking about the word?
Also noticeable with other words; I had a friend form the US freak out when she heard ``what the fuck'' on the radio.
This is some Voldemort level bullshit.
