nigs, nogs, or nig-nogs but never nog-nigs. Why?

It's because the word that contains 'i' ALWAYS precedes the word that contains a different vowel in phrases like 'nig-nog' (think ding-dong, ping-pong, tim-tam tit-for-tat, etc).
