Soapbox phenomenon

Name: Anonymous 2018-10-26 3:23

This is the term I'm using for something I've noticed. It's usually among dumber people, or people who think they're smarter than they really are.

As you are aware, social media provides people with a platform that can potentially give people fame or attention. However, most of the time, it does not, because most content is mediocre.

But I've noticed among my friends and family that they often think the mere fact that they use a platform means they're somehow e-celebs or going to be celebrities in the future. When someone confidently tells me how they "got Instagram" recently, or "got Soundcloud" and how they're "a musician" and "an artist" (despite the fact that they have NO talent whatsoever) shows how intoxicating this shit is to normie morons.

Someone thinks they're a future pop musician because they simply upload their garbage tracks to Soundcloud. They think that ONE OF THESE DAYS, they're going to go viral and be famous and live a lavish life. They genuinely believe that. They don't seem to get that the allure is part of the platform, and that it owes them nothing, and they aren't guaranteed to be successful just by using something.

Wow, you made a Patreon account! That must mean people need to start paying you, right? Oh, you use Twitter now? Surely that makes you a political pundit and people really care about your opinion! Oh wait, no it doesn't.

But merely by providing people with a soapbox, it changes their self-perception. They think people actually give a shit even when they don't. The soapbox phenomenon.
