I agree with idea in principle, but "Hell is other people" is too broad of a generalizations, there is always a small minority of people that are 100% compatible with us - however people change, and their character isn't constant. The world we live for, is actually a general concept of "good people of the world" for whom we improve the world, not the vast majority of brutes and know-nothings. The brighter side of humanity that gives us "faith in humanity" however small.

I don't think that phrase was necessarily meant to pass a negative judgement on the masses, but rather that the source of a person's discomfort comes from being observed by other people and perceived differently from who we really are
