Lolwut? HookTube and archive.is are around because there is a market for these services. And the big reasons for them is #1: the alternative sites don't have the population and network effect anywhere near the level of Google/YouTube and are largely used as a backup in case (which is quite likely) YouTube cracks down even more than they already have. And #2: Until Google/YouTube either relax their policies or ramp them up to the point where only their approved propaganda and cat videos are the only content allowed, then they will continue to be used (archive.is will probably always be used regardless since it was made for archiving Web pages).
I think it's more often called character assassination, and it's not always bad. See Cosby. The fucked up thing is how long it took for some people to reap what they sow.
