Numerals are basically logograms, right?

Name: Anonymous 2016-07-24 17:35

Sup /lang/, it just occured to me that there's really nothing inherent about numerals like 1, 2, 3 that would lead speakers to pronounce them "one", "two", and "three", and indeed, a Spanish speaker would look at those numbers and use entirely different words like uno, dos, and tres.

Numerals therefore follow the same principle as a logogram, but is it entirely a logogram? I mean, we also have derivations like 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, which are derived from different words but use the same numeral/symbol.

What about 一 and 壱, they both mean one and are pronounced the same, yet use different symbols.

How am I wrong? 1 and I are both the same numbers, but they are different numerals. Numerals are a purely linguistic invention.

Numbers are a social construct invented by the patriarchy.
Cis-numeral bigotry and digitophobia in this board illustrates the extreme hatred and internalized misonumery this place exhibits.
