``Renewable'' and ``Sustainable'' Energy

Name: Anonymous 2015-06-27 1:09

Solar power isn't sustainable because it's dependent on the sun. The sun will run out of energy eventually. It will actually probably scorch and explode and swallow up the earth. That will mean no more wind power either.

So what if we move to other planets and solar systems and galaxies? Even if we can make the leap to Mars or Kepler-22b or even farther off shit, even if we can harvest the power of stars using Dyson spheres, that still doesn't change the laws of thermodynamics.

Eventually we will run out of stars to harvest. Eventually there will be no more energy in the universe except in black holes, but even they will die off after trillions of years. Eventually the universe will experience heat death.

So what is truly sustainable? Traveling to other universes and continuing our history of depleting resources to keep ourselves afloat? What's the point in a meta-existence like this where we are mainly living our existence trying to keep it going? Even now most plebs work 40 hours (or more) a week just to survive. And more time is spent resting, cleaning, cooking, eating, etc. which is all so they can continue to work.

It seems recursive and needlessly pointless to me. We're going to consume energy so that we can continue to consume energy? Even if we can find a sustainable method of multiverse energy theft, we're still just slaves to physics.

Maybe we'll invent perpetual energy. Hack the universe!

We should harvest the power from magical girls.

Yet most countries throw out tonnes of food a month, most jobs involve 5+ hours of looking busy doing nothing a day, unemployment remains high, and wages remain unrelated to productivity or to the cost of living. Looking at these facts, one would be wise to question whether the powers that be (the ones who control energy/resource access) actually like us and wish us the best.

Because if they don't, then they would see no need to produce magical batteries and Dyson spheres to keep our comfortable lifestyles plodding along. Thus, the future of energy will look a lot like the past - households and lifestyles revolving around the production and maintenance of food and warmth. No going to space or having use for magic solar batteries, just scraping out a living from the Earth.

But at least you won't have to see the fabulous lifestyles of the few that choose your destiny for you, as they will be on private islands with heirloom seeds and robots powered nuclear power.
