prague confessions thread

It's time to expose those things that you don't want your fellow /prog/riders know about you.
So I go first:
• never been good in any touhou game, actually my reflex sucks
• never finished SICP, actually didn't even read halft of it
• i do web development, usually just html and css

kill me

I'm attracted to cartoon horses.

#3 is the only significant sin you have, and that can be corrected by taking care of #2 (or #1 in a pinch).

I guess I have to confess my sins now that I've replied.

- I don't really like Lisp for nontrivial pieces of software because it's so goddamn slow. I blame all the performance woes of my Emacs on this.
- I've never actually seen Lain.
- I think most of computer science should be rebuilt focusing on the RAM model, completely throwing away Turing Machines.
- I can't decide whether Yukari or Pache is the best 2hu.
- I have no real opinions on the Hebrew people.

* i'm not good at any touhou game either, but unlike 85% of prague, i've actually played the games
* haven't read chapter 5 of sicp yet
* die in a fire

How can someone so perfect like me sin? I write everything in C.

Name: Anonymous 2013-11-27 18:44

Simple. Just #include <math.h> and remember to link with -lm!

Name: Anonymous 2013-11-27 20:33

If you're so perfect, wouldn't it be Holy C?

Name: Anonymous 2013-11-27 22:45

These are the only ones I can think of...

- Never written a full compiler (only a full interpreter)
- Never written a proper OS (got a kernel to boot and basic userland then got bored)
- Haven't designed my own language yet

- Lisp is not *that* slow. I use it for ``smallish'' things like implementing very specific server protocols (like MUDs or such) and it works wonderfully for that. Hell, even FIOC would be fast enough not that slow for those applications. Using anything other than C or Sepples for an actually big project that's mostly CPU bound should be considered a crime, but whatever.

- If you've never watched any anime series before, I don't recommend watching Lain before you watch some other stuff. Or who knows, maybe it will lure you into watching more Japanese crap? Well, I don't blame you if you don't understand it. You have to rewatch it like three times to actually know what the fuck's going on. You might not like it (I loved it but your tastes may differ), but I can guarantee you will at least love the opening song.

- I'm a student of a linear combination (without computable coefficients) of CE, SE and IT. Only Allah knows what the fuck this thing is supposed to be, but I'm sure as hell I've never used Turing machines in courses that are not about theoretical computer science. The rest of the courses use exclusively the RAM model or simply don't use anything at all because who gives a damn about that abstract bullshite for nerds when you've got these hot stripping Java EE EE EEnterprise Beans.

- They're both likable if you consider their actual personalities and none of the fanon bullshit. But I'd take any of the bird 2hus over them.

- Semitic people (that includes both Muslims and Jews) are an interesting bunch. Reading about their cultures sure is fun.

- I read HN everyday. It feels dirty...

I know how you feel. I used to scan it daily, just on the off chance that there might be something good there. Accepting that no, there is never anything good on HN was a liberating experience.

I read HN and proggit everyday, looking for links that are worth reposting here.

I like FIOC.

The thing with FIOC is that it's obviously not perfect, but it's not that bad. It's practical, it's fast, and it's better than most languages. It has stuff from Lisp like (limited) lambdas, and `map'. It doesn't force you to write 100 lines of useless overhead like Jabba. It's garbage collected. It has flexible data types (kind of like lisp). That's business with .NET, Gerald. Checkmate.

It's not that bad, it's slow as fuck and it is indeed more practical for most things, but there are some objectively worse things like its retarded OOP (but OOP is shit anyway).

But it's way too practical to be ignored. That's what I like so much about it.

To me it just doesn't have the raw sex appeal of perl.

Name: Anonymous 2013-12-09 17:09

Hey girl, I'm into hardcore Perl.

I didn't want anyone to know I was so late to this thread, so I checked the ``Don't bump'' option.

* I've never programmed in lisp, python, or perl
* I think sepples is actually a good language
* I think function prototypes are a waste of time
* I've programmed in C and BASIC, but only ironically
* I've never read SICP
* I don't know what a touhou is
* I use Windows

What exactly do you mean? The tape of a Turing machine basically represents ram, while the CPU architecture is abstracted away into what the head does. The only real difference is that a real computer doesn't have unbounded memory.
