Neil Harrison Give it a rest. Fact. The whole priest crew noticed the difference in vibe after Kk left. They knew it wasn't the same. But. The working environment was better. Maybe kk leaving slapped people into being smarter /more pro . The end result was a more switched on unit. Fuck the management /and maybe elements in the band? Dunno. I know it's a functioning unit now. Imagine being 70?and still bitching?i also wish kks thing the best. The new stuff sounds great. But! Not as good as "RESURRECTION" or "CRUCIBLE" . Ian Presland James Serreti Well you may not understand how bad the venue was that I saw them at. We lived in a small town in North Wales. It was the late 70's and in the next town we had what was known as a Leisure Centre. It incorporated an ice rink, sports hall and other leisure activities. There were also several bars on the premises , one of which was a sort of night club/ballroom where they held discos and weddings and formal dinner dances etc. Occasionally they held live pop concerts , but it was usually old 60's acts like Joe Brown and the Searchers. Well Priest appeared there in what was known as the Hawarden Suite. It held maybe a couple of hundred. My mates and I decided to go along, we were Sabbath, Purple, Zeppelin, Skynyrd fans and went to gigs regularly, usually in the nearest big City which was Liverpool, 25 miles away. So we thought we'd go to see this band who were pretty new. The Hawarden Suite was on the first floor of the building and there were multiple rooms and corridors around it. We knew of a way to sneak in without paying. So we did, we went the bar got some beers and then watched the band for may be 20 minutes. They were appalling. The screeching of the singer was ear shattering and the music just a noise. We were standing about 20 feet from the stage and having picked up some flyers on the way in started rolling them up and lobbing them at the bass player, who was not too happy. This was maybe 15/20 minutes into the show. We were just kids, maybe 17/18. Then along with quite a few others we decided to drink up and leave. To this day I still can't believe that band ever had any success
Metal Pilgrim todSesponr27 0443maf109hr42c,m20mtt4M 8841396105c72ag70l210h · On this day in 1971 the newly formed band Judas Priest played their first ever concert at St. John's Hall in Essington, England!🔥
This was the very first time the band, known prior as FREIGHT, took the name Judas Priest, thus beginning the history of one of the greatest Heavy Metal bands of all times!🤘
The setlist consisted only of covers (mostly on Hendrix and Quatermass) and it might actually be the only photo of that line up, which consisted of Ian Hill, KK Downing, Al Atkins and the drummer John Ellis.
And how many time have YOU seen the mighty Priest live?
btw... there are A LOT of episodes on the early days of Judas Priest, its history and formation on the Metal Pilgrim YouTube channel, so make sure to check them out on such a day!😉

One such promotion spurred the headline of this article. While announcing a guitar masterclass with Faulkner, the band states: “…Poised now to celebrate that illustrious career as they enter their 50th year in the industry – 2020 should have seen the band embark on an epic 50th-anniversary tour in celebration but due to Covid-19, this has had to be postponed to 2021… When the previous guitarist left in 2011 with a still-burning desire to continue flying the flag of metal, Judas Priest decided to continue on, by enlisting newcomer Richie Faulkner on guitar. The move seemed to have reinvigorated the band…”

In any case, he puts to rest a dispute with K.K.Downing of who came up with the leather-and-studs image that would become a trademark of the heavy metal genre: K.K. did suggest the style and Halford went along.

Speaking of K.K., his individual musical contributions (prior to British Steel where Judas Priest began writing as a team) seem almost entirely omitted from the book, in favour of various references to Glenn Tipton and his “ingenious riffs”. There are words full of sentiment as to how he and Halford wrote music together; in contrast, there’s no reference to Before The Dawn, a ballad by Downing which is known to have been very personal to Halford, who wrote the lyrics. In addition, there’s a distinct negative colouring of Downing’s character, referring to him as “constantly moaning: that’s what he does”, at times completely irrational, and being notorious for holding a grudge. In contrast, Glenn is portrayed as self-assured, determined and clear-visioned, almost a saintly figure “with a beatific smile”, who would regularly dismiss Downing’s “moaning” with a sarcastic remark.

It is nearly painful to read such accounts in light of the book by K.K. Downing, which serves as a poignant outlet for his life of frustration within the band, caused primarily by the condescension and dismissal by its dominant figure (Tipton), even when vital matters were brought to the table, pertaining to both the band’s business and interpersonal dynamics.
“I think the best 50th anniversary celebration “Priest” could present already happened, and it was in Wolverhampton a few weeks ago.” K.K. had the brisk demeanour of a child, coupled with mature sensitivity, bringing his wonderful takes and twists to Priest solos.

K.K. Downing clarified why metal fans shouldn’t be split between Judas Priest and KK’s Priest in a recent interview with Guitar World. 2020 saw the guitarist leave Judas Priest and team up with Tim “Ripper” Owens to form KK’s Priest. At first, Downing claimed that he was tired of his previous band and felt helpless there, and that he was finding it hard to move on from the past and join a new one. He then stated the following in response to the interviewer’s assertion that metal fans don’t have to choose between Judas Priest and KK’s Priest: Since I am the same player, I have KK’s Priest instead of K.K. from Judas Priest. The same articulation belongs to me. I’m sticking with the same speakers and amplifiers and my definition of what makes a great song. Regarding what creates a nice lead sound and a decent guitar sound, I agree with you. I’m only carrying out my initial course of action. He was questioned again about if the style of KK’s Priest was reminiscent of the early Judas Priest. After expressing his opinions on that, the musician talked about: “Not really, considering how little I knew about music at the time. That was fine for the occasion.
It feels more like I’m starting over right now with this relatively unknown band. He went on to elaborate, stating that without knowing the precise scales at the time, they primarily employed major and minor scales along with a few chromatic and artistic aspects. Having gained more knowledge and expertise, he now adds different scales, such as the Ionian and harmonic minor. However, Downing has been applying his Judas Priest experiences to his new project. On September 29, KK’s Priest released their second album, titled “The Sinner Rides Again.” In an October interview with Consequence, the guitarist discussed the project, stating that it was an extension of their debut album. The second album purposefully got a little more edgy, whereas the first album had a more nostalgic vibe. Then he explained how his time as a priest had enabled him to do that, pointing out: “For the new record, I reasoned that we should step it up a notch and take a cue from [Judas Priest]’s ‘Painkiller,’ which they did after ‘Ram It Down.'” We simply took it a little too seriously. So I believe that the second album has a little bit of that. Otherwise, though, I believe that both albums would sound identical to me if they shared the same production.
